Business Days Calculator

A net-30 invoice, a SLA that promises resolution within two business days, a sprint that must exclude the company holiday shutdown, a visa application that allows ninety working days from submission. Every one of these turns into a calendar date only after you subtract weekends and holidays, and counting that by hand on a wall calendar is how deadlines get missed.

Enter two dates, choose which weekdays your team actually rests, paste any holiday list, and read the working-day total with a full breakdown. The second panel moves a date forward or backward by N business days for deadline math.

Uses the same weekend and holiday settings as the range calculator above.

How the counting algorithm works

Dates are parsed as UTC calendar days so daylight saving transitions in the local timezone cannot shift a date across a day boundary during the walk. The range is expanded day by day from the earlier endpoint to the later one (the tool swaps them if you enter them reversed), and each day is tested in order against the weekend set, then the holiday set, then counted as a working day.

Weekend classification uses the JavaScript getUTCDay value, where Sunday is zero and Saturday is six; the checkboxes map directly onto those integers. Holidays are normalized to the same YYYY-MM-DD string form and held in a set for constant-time lookup, with duplicates collapsed and invalid lines reported rather than silently ignored.

The add-business-days panel runs the same classifier repeatedly, stepping one calendar day at a time and decrementing a remaining counter only on working days, which naturally rolls across weekends and holidays until the target count is reached. Negative counts step backward with identical logic.

Before and after: a net-20 invoice window

Input — invoice issued Monday, November 2 2026, payable within 20 business days, US Thanksgiving shutdown observed:

start: 2026-11-02 (Monday)
add: 20 business days
weekend: Saturday, Sunday
holidays: 2026-11-26 (Thanksgiving)
              2026-11-27 (day after)

Output:

due date: 2026-12-02 (Wednesday)
20 working days after Nov 2, skipping eight weekend days
and the two Thanksgiving holidays
naive +20 calendar days would have said Nov 22 (Sunday)

Who counts business days

Developers

  • Sanity-check a billing library that claims to prorate on business days by comparing its output against an independent count here.
  • Compute expected resolution timestamps for SLA dashboards that promise N-business-day turnaround rather than raw hours.
  • Generate test fixtures with known working-day spans before wiring a scheduler that must skip weekends.

Production

  • Confirm finance close calendars that count business days between period end and payment release dates.
  • Validate vendor contract terms like net-45 business days against the actual corporate holiday schedule before signing.
  • Plan data retention jobs that must run on working days only, matching an operations team that staffs no weekend shifts.

Workflow

  • Set project milestones by adding business days to a kickoff date instead of guessing with calendar weeks.
  • Answer customer questions about return windows and warranty periods that are written in working days, not calendar days.
  • Check visa, tax filing, and regulatory response deadlines that jurisdictions legally define in business days.

Common mistakes in business-day math

  • Using calendar days when the contract says business days. A net-15-business-day invoice is roughly three calendar weeks, not half a month. Mixing the two units is the single most common cause of late-payment disputes and missed SLA credits.
  • Forgetting regional weekends. A team in the Gulf states resting Friday and Saturday will compute a different span than a London team resting Sunday only. Set the weekend checkboxes to match the jurisdiction that governs the deadline, not the one your laptop is set to.
  • Double-counting holiday weekends. A holiday that falls on a Saturday was already excluded as a weekend day. The tool only decrements the working-day count for holidays on candidate working days, so a holiday list full of weekend dates does not shrink the span twice.
  • Including the start day by accident. If the clock starts the day after an event, toggle the include-start option off. Including it when you should not shifts every deadline one working day early, which looks fine in testing and fails under audit.

Best practices for deadline calculations

  • 1.Keep the holiday list in a shared file that finance and legal both sign off on, and paste that same file here whenever a deadline is recalculated, so two departments never work from different assumptions.
  • 2.Store due dates as concrete calendar dates in your systems after computing them once, rather than re-deriving business days at display time when the holiday list may have changed.
  • 3.Document whether the start day counts in the contract language itself; the phrase counting the day of notice is worth an explicit sentence in any agreement that uses business-day windows.
  • 4.Re-run the add-business-days panel whenever a company announces a new holiday, because a single added shutdown day moves every open deadline downstream by one working day.

Frequently asked questions

How are business days counted between two dates?

The calculator walks every calendar day from the start date to the end date inclusive (you can exclude the start day with a toggle), then classifies each day as a weekend day, a holiday, or a working day. Only the working days are tallied into the business-day total, and the breakdown shows how many weekend and holiday days were skipped so the arithmetic is easy to audit. Both endpoints count as calendar days even when they fall on weekends.

Can I use a weekend other than Saturday and Sunday?

Yes. Most of the world rests on Saturday and Sunday, but Friday-Saturday is the standard weekend across much of the Middle East, and some teams run a Sunday-only rest day. The weekend selector lets you mark any combination of the seven weekdays; every unmarked day is treated as a candidate working day before holidays are applied.

How do holidays affect the calculation?

Paste holiday dates one per line or separated by commas, and any of them that fall inside the range and on a non-weekend day subtract from the business-day count. Holidays that land on weekends are recorded but do not reduce the total twice, because weekend days were already excluded. The result lists the holidays that were actually applied inside the range so you can spot typos in your list immediately.

What does the include-start-day toggle do?

By default the start date itself counts toward the total if it is a working day, which matches how people usually phrase a deadline like from today for ten business days. Turning the toggle off treats the start date as day zero, which is the right behavior when the start date marks an event that happens at the end of a day, such as an invoice issued at close of business. The calendar-day count always includes both endpoints regardless of this toggle.

How does the add-business-days feature work?

The second panel starts from a date and moves forward (or backward, with a negative number) one working day at a time, skipping weekends and any listed holidays, until the requested count is reached. This is the fastest way to turn a net-15 payment term or a SLA response window into an actual calendar date without opening a spreadsheet.

Are half-days or working Saturdays handled?

The model is binary: a day is either a working day or it is not. If your organization works half-days on Fridays or has occasional Saturday shifts, mark those as working days by removing them from the weekend selection, and the count will treat them as full working days. Precision beyond that, such as weighting a half-day as 0.5, is better handled in a spreadsheet where the business rule is explicit.

Does the calculator know public holidays for my country?

No bundled holiday calendar is included, because holiday schedules vary by country, state, religion, and year, and a partially correct built-in list is more dangerous than none. Paste the dates that matter for your calculation; the list persists in the input for the session so you can reuse it across multiple ranges. Many teams keep a shared holiday text file in their tracker and paste it here when planning.
